2014 Minnesota Vikings
Brett Favre and the Veteran Gambit: The Minnesota Vikings Are Up for the Gamble
Since Brett Favre signed with the Vikings on August 18, his impact on the team’s season has been a source of much speculation. The team is so loaded with talent that Favre himself has commented that, “[T]he pieces are in place and you don’t have to do that much.” One imagines that the Minnesota Vikings is a sort of Lexus that will parallel park itself into a division championship as long as there is a competent driver at the wheel. While some pundits are skeptical that Favre will make a significant difference in the team’s prospects this season, it is difficult to believe that the quarterback who holds most of the passing records in the NFL will not make an impact, especially when paired with a running back who is arguably the best in the league. We can, no doubt, expect some measurable improvement—at least for this season. Favre’s fingers-crossed attitude towards coming out of retirement makes any long-term advantage to the team look rather precarious. Teams often sign veteran players past their prime so that they can help bring along younger players while still going in for a few plays. But signing Favre after he has twice announced his retirement is a somewhat unusual variation on this strategy, a sort of veteran gambit. Click Here to Read More

The strategy is unusual, in part, because Favre is unusually gifted. An ESPN fan poll ranked Favre fourth among the all-time greatest quarterbacks, behind Montana, Marino and Elway. Of these, Montana was the only one to play for another team at the end of his career. In 1993 he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. The team also acquired Marcus Allen that year and together they had a phenomenal season, making it to the AFC championship, where they lost to Buffalo. And that was after returning with an ostensibly worse injury than Favre’s recently repaired rotator cuff. Despite the Chiefs’ success with Joe Montana, his stint with the team made no lasting improvement, particularly at the quarterback position. The Chiefs were a pretty good—not great—team before Montana arrived and they were pretty much the same after he left. If he improved the team’s culture by virtue of his ability, attitude or experience, the improvement didn’t manifest in playoff success. Kansas City had been inconsistent at quarterback and although Joe Montana was arguably the best around, his two seasons on the team did nothing to fundamentally change that.
Minnesota finds itself in a similar situation, with talent on both sides of the ball and perhaps a quarterback away from a Super Bowl. But it is worth considering what happens when his contract expires in two years, or if he decides one year is all his old bones can stand and he re-retires, or if, God forbid, he gets injured and can’t finish the season. Or he could get injured and still finish the season—like he did last season. What improvements can we expect to see in what Favre believes is essentially a ready-made system? Should we expect Sage Rosenfels or Tavaris Jackson to slide right into the groove cut by Favre? Perhaps a more pressing issue is the effect of Favre’s signing on the team dynamic. Chris Carter expressed his indignation rather vigorously on behalf of Rosenfels and Jackson on ESPN saying, “If you have a forty-year-old quarterback, don’t you think you might need a back-up? And the back-up’s been lied to repeatedly, whichever one it is.” When you have the opportunity to bring in a big gun like Favre, someone will get pushed aside. Everyone hopes that guy will make the best of it but if he doesn’t, everyone understands. Rosenfels, assuming he would have been the starter, could learn a lot from Favre, but then, he has already learned a lot from a lot of other guys over the past eight seasons. Bill Williamson writes that Rosenfels had thought Favre was out of the picture when he didn’t show up for camp, but was not terribly surprised by the reversal. Jackson is quoted as saying, “I’m disappointed. But I’ll continue to try to get better.” The situation might not be ripe for an apprenticeship.
Stability at quarterback is essential for a top-tier football team and in the short term, Brett Favre can certainly provide that. But he is, at best, a quick fix, one or two shots at post-season glory. Coach Childress had better consider what happens two years from now when, in all likelihood, he will have a mere mortal throwing the ball. Signing a great quarterback is not the same as solving your quarterback problem. The veteran gambit means bringing in a super-star and hoping that he is the last piece of the puzzle that takes your team from good to great. But the Vikings need to keep an eye on the broader implications of the move as well. When Favre retires for good, at least from the Vikings, the team may be much the same as it was before, it may be slightly better despite his departure, or it might be worse for whatever resentment and disappointment the move ultimately caused. No one likes rebuilding years, especially when so many key elements appear to be in place. But dismal years after a brilliant season or two are just as bad, but with less to look forward to.

For 2014 A few teams stand out as going to the Super Bowl, the San Diego Chargers, the New England Patriots, the New Orleans Saints, and the Atlanta Falcons. They all seem to have made key changes to effect their game for the positive. Out of those four, the Patriots and the Falcons really have honed in to what they needed to accomplish over the off season, and so they will be in the Super Bowl.
New York Giants
We have NFL Football tickets for all home and away New York Giants games. The New York Giants have been surprisingly quiet. Wide receivers Amani Toomer and Plaxico Burress are not part of the team anymore. Who will fill that void? Does Eli Manning have it again? Even if Eli has got it, they would be a long shot for the Super Bowl

Atlanta Falcons
We stock tickets for all Atlanta Falcon NFL games at the Georgia Dome. Atlanta has made all the right moves this off season. They have kept all their key players, quarterback Matt Ryan, running back Michael Turner, and wide reciever Roddy White. They added an excellent tight end in Tony Gonzalez, and linebacker Mike Petersen. They are ripe for a repeat performance from last year.
