2014 San Francisco 49ers
49ers Wide Receiver Micheal Crabtree Still Holding Out
The image of Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree manhandling a Texas corner and breaking free to score the go-ahead touchdown for Texas Tech is still burned in many football fans heads, just don’t expect to see it from him in a red and gold San Francisco 49ers jersey anytime soon.
As pre-season games are well under way, the 10th overall selection Crabtree is still holding out for a better contract with his new employer the 49ers. Crabtree has decided to sit out the 2014 season if a contract demand of $23.5 million of guaranteed money is not met. Click Here to Read More

David Wells, Crabtree's cousin, told the press that they're prepared to do sit out, claiming that he simply wants his fair market value..
The former Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year winner has been a menace to opposing defenses with his strong 6’3’’ frame and blazing speed ever since his Freshman year at Texas Tech. Many scouts ranked Crabtree as one of the best athlete’s period in the 2014 draft. So, when the Oakland Raiders passed on Crabtree at the seventh pick and took wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey instead, the 49ers jumped at the chance of taking such a game changer.
Many believed that the pick was the steal of the draft, as many had Crabtree going much higher in the draft. Now what looked like a dream pick for the 49ers is quickly becoming a nightmare due to Crabtree holding out and with no sign of caving in.
Crabtree has taken cues from what others have been paid, including Heyward-Bey, who was given a five-year contract with at least $23.5 million guaranteed. Crabtree feels he should be paid just as much as players such as Heyward-Bey, if not more.
On August 15th, 49ers President Jed York announced that they would sign Crabtree before the first preseason game against the Denver Broncos, but that date has come and gone. Although still confident in signing the wide receiver, questions are still swirling if the marquee player will play this season. It does feel as though Crabtree is ready to sit and wait to get paid like the type of player he thinks he is and what many people predict him to be.
To make matters worse, though, the 49ers were 7-9 last season and were 5-11 in 2007. The team still has plenty of question marks on their current roster, including who’s going to be throwing the ball to Crabtree if he ends up getting signed. Along with this, the 49ers have questions on defense that ended up not going addressed during the draft due to Crabtree being selected.
The debate over who will be throwing the ball in San Francisco is still in question. Shaun Hill has been named the starter, but how long that will last is about as certain as how long Crabtree will decide to sit. After all, the 49ers have former number one pick Alex Smith sitting on the bench.
But both quarterbacks have failed to show they are ready for a starting role in the NFL, leaving many to wonder how points will be made after defenses start to key on pro-bowl running back Frank Gore.
Along with these questions on offense, in 2008 the 49ers defense gave up more than 30 points on six different occasions and was prone to the big play pass due to a shaky secondary at best. None of these concerns on this side of the ball were addressed during the offseason, which has to make 49er fans cringe at how the team will be able to keep scores low.
But there is upside to all of this, even if Crabtree doesn’t suit up and needs weren’t filled. The 49ers were after all 4-1 in the last five games of the season and new coach Mike Singletary, with his no-nonsense style of coaching, had the team playing like they had something to prove. Can he light the fire again this year for the team that is often overmatched by the other teams superior athletes is a big question.
The Michael Crabtree drama might be an issue that drags on to the 2014 season and the 49ers may have gone from making the best selection in the draft to the worst. But there is a ray of light for a team that hasn’t seen much success since the hay-days of Steve Young and Joe Montana.
Will this be the year that the 49ers make a break for a playoff run? Highly doubtful. Would Crabtree make the team that much better anyways? Probably not right away. But for team that has struggled and for a town starving to regain the power its team once held in the NFL, he will have to be on the field if they have any shot at being relevant in the football world again.
For the 49ers sake, let’s hope that the 49ers decide to pay Crabtree. Otherwise, 2014 might be another year where San Francisco will have to reminisce over all the glory days.
