Qwest Field: The Rowdy, Loud Home of the Seattle Seahawks
So just why is it that the Seattle Seahawks have such an impressive record when playing at home? Not to take anything away from the team, but a lot of people think that much of the credit goes to the place where they play: Qwest Field is designed in such a way that the already-loud fans' noise is magnified to an incredible level. That pumps up the spirits of the Seahawks—and also makes it harder for the opponents to hear. Let's take a look at Qwest Field, home of the Seahawks.
Qwest Field is actually a multi-purpose stadium, used not just for the NFL team, but for other major events and teams also. For instance, it's also the home field for the Seattle Sounders (the major league soccer team). There are also major conferences and events hosted at the facility, thanks to a WaMu Theater, large public plaza, and an ample parking complex. All of these make it possible for Qwest Field to host concerts, consumer shows, trade shows, as well as special sporting events such as the NCAA Tournament.
Funding for a new stadium was approved by Washington State voters in June of 1997. Paul Allen was the man who was most heavily involved throughout the design process, and the one who stressed the importance of the new stadium being an open-air venue that was large, and yet arranged in a way so that it had an intimate atmosphere. Currently, Qwest Field can seat 67,000 fans, and for special events, room for 5,000 more can be easily (and temporarily) created.
And yes, as we mentioned, Qwest Field is notoriously loud and raucous during Seahawk games. It's been noted throughout the sports media that this noise contributes to the Seahawks' home field advantage, and also results in more false-start penalties against the opposing team.
Even though we normally think of Qwest Field as the Seahawks' home, the stadium was actually designed with the sport of soccer foremost in mind. In fact, the stadium's first event was a soccer game, played by the then-Seattle-home team. The USL started regularly using the stadium for Seattle's at-home games in 2003, and when the Seattle Sounders started playing in 2014, they immediately started playing there.
Going back to the beginning, after the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks had spent more than 20 years in the King dome, both teams came to realize they desperately needed new facilities. A 1995 county bond issue to build a new stadium failed, but Seahawks owner Ken Behring didn't give up. He threatened to move the franchise elsewhere if a new stadium could not be provided. At this, Paul Allen promised to buy the team if the county would build a new stadium. This time the vote passed, and Allen kept his word and bought the Seahawks. After the purchase, Allen formed First & Goal, whose chief purpose was building and operating a new stadium, exhibit hall and parking garage.
And so it was that in September 1998, construction started on the first phase: the parking garage and exhibition center. Then by 1999, they were open and the exhibition center was hosting events. Soon after, in March 2000, the Kingdome fell to a planned implosion, to make room for the new stadium (then referred to as “Seahawks Stadium”).
A year later, in 2001, construction began on the stadium. It was christened by the Seahawks in August, 2002.
Qwest Field is U-Shaped...oval at one end, with an open north end. This gives visitors a spectacular view of downtown Seattle as well as of the large north plaza. There's also a 13 story tower at the end, designed to visually complement the Seattle skyline. Located there is the vertical scoreboard at the tower top as well as bleachers which seat 3,000 (in an area called the “Hawk's Nest”) near the base. The vertical scoreboard is the NFL's first such design.
Another first for Qwest is its luxury suites located straight behind the north end zone, giving the viewers there an “in your face” view of the action. The south end is also partially open, allowing visitors a sensational view of Mt. Rainier.
One unusual fact: At a time when other teams were building stadiums with retractable roofs, Paul Allen rejected this concept. He preferred to leave open a view to the Seattle area. And it was a bonus that this saved quite a bit of money in construction.
Inside the stadium, visitors will find salmon colored concrete and red brick on the structure's west side. The east side features a huge glass curtain wall, allowing for an amazing view.
Originally, it was planned that the stadium's field would be natural grass. However, after playing on field Turf during the 2000 and 2001 seasons, the Seahawk management decided they preferred this artificial turf, and had it installed.
Qwest Field has been an amazing success for its hosted teams and the city. It regularly sells out for NFL Seahawks games. Last year alone, they sold 61,000 season tickets, and the 14,000 single game tickets sold out in just 15 minutes of becoming available.
Visiting Seattle is not complete unless you make a visit to Qwest Stadium. And of course, it's even better if you take in a Seahawks game while you're there.
