2014 St. Louis Rams
The St. Louis Rams and Mark Bulger
When the Rams played their first year in St. Louis in 1995, I was in college. It took me a while to get used to them, since in my mind the Cardinals were still “the home team” (For the young among you, the Arizona Cardinals started off, like their baseball counterparts, as The St. Louis Cardinals). Still, I enjoyed watching the Rams. As I did, I saw some truly great quarterback play (Kurt Warner for the Greatest Show on Turf). I also witnessed plenty of horrid QB play (just about everyone else).

This makes judging Marc Bulger’s tenure as the Rams starting quarterback almost impossible. On one hand, he’s the second best quarterback in the franchise’s fourteen years in St. Louis. His competition for that title? Beyond the five games Trent Green started in 2000, the list includes Tony Banks, Chris Miller, and washed-up versions of Mark Rypien, Steve Bono, Steve Walsh, Chris Chandler, and Gus Frerotte.
Bulger played well in seven games in 2002, and posted solid numbers in 2003, 2004, and 2006. In the past two seasons, though, he has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns and has not finished with a passer rating higher than 71.4.
Among Rams fans, there is a definitive line drawn in the sand about Bulger. On one side, you have his supporters, who argue that injuries and lack of talent around him have contributed to his sliding numbers. On the other side, you have the critics who argue that Bulger is done, that he’ll never approach the respectable numbers he used to put up.
I cannot deny that I’m in the second group. My biggest problem with Bulger comes from the perception that he is an “accurate” quarterback. Statistically, this claim holds up. Until 2007, Bulger never finished a season with a lower completion percentage than 63%.
But anyone who has seen Bulger play on a consistent basis knows that his completion percentage can be extremely misleading. Bulger has trouble hitting receivers in stride. He has trouble putting the ball in a catchable position, often getting bailed out by nice catches from two of the best receivers of the past decade.
Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt might not approach the coverage devoted to louder receivers such as Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, or Chad Ochocinco, but take a closer look at their numbers. Bruce only trails Jerry Rice on the all-time receiving yards list with 14,944 for his career. Holt isn’t too far behind with his 12,660 career yards, and his eight seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards put him behind only Jerry Rice, Tim Brown, and Jimmy Smith on that list.
Without any attention grabbing behavior, Bruce and Holt have played in a combined eleven Pro Bowls, and one could argue they deserved more than that. Bruce totaled 1,781 yards in 1995, second most all-time in a single season, and yet was selected as only a first alternate for the Pro Bowl roster.
Basically, for his entire Rams career, Bulger has had two Hall-of-Fame worthy wide receivers grabbing his passes. Last year, Bruce left for the San Francisco 49ers (one of the biggest crimes by the former Rams front office, by the way, letting Ike go to any other team, let alone the hated 49ers). Holt’s receptions and yardage totals surpassed only his rookie season numbers. Now he’s gone, signing with the Jaguars after his release from the Rams. The Rams wide receiver core now consists of Donnie Avery, Derek Stanley, Laurent Robinson, Keenan Burton, Tim Carter, and Ronald Curry.
While I don’t expect Bulger to turn any of these guys into Holt or Bruce, this season will test whether Bulger is worth the contract he signed in 2007. Bulger does not have any guaranteed money left on his contract beyond this season, and if the Rams are not satisfied with his performance, they can cut him at no cost.
And while the Rams have not brought in any big-time wide receivers, they have worked to improve their offensive line, to at least give Bulger more time in the pocket. They drafted tackle Jason Smith out of Baylor, and signed former Ravens center Jason Brown to a big contract. The line should be better than it has in years past, when it has been partly to blame for Bulger’s injuries and inefficient play.
It’s put up or shut up time. Bulger has been given a chance as the unquestioned number one guy. Unless Kyle Boller improves in almost every way, the roster does not contain a better alternative at the quarterback position. It never has. Since Bulger became the starter, his backups have been the likes of Gus Frerotte, the artist formerly known as Trent Green, and Jamie Martin. Not once has Bulger been pushed by a good young quarterback, never had to compete for that starting job.
A bad year from Bulger will most likely put the Rams right back where they’ve been the past few years, selecting in the top five in the NFL draft. Young signal-callers such as Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford and Texas’ Colt McCoy will be available in the draft pool.
Bulger does not need to be spectacular, merely solid with the talent level around him. If he’s not, the St. Louis Rams longest tenured starting quarterback will be looking for a new job. Just because you hang around the longest, doesn’t mean you’re great. It could just mean you’ve outstayed your welcome.

For 2014 A few teams stand out as going to the Super Bowl, the San Diego Chargers, the New England Patriots, the New Orleans Saints, and the Atlanta Falcons. They all seem to have made key changes to effect their game for the positive. Out of those four, the Patriots and the Falcons really have honed in to what they needed to accomplish over the off season, and so they will be in the Super Bowl.
New York Giants
We have NFL Football tickets for all home and away New York Giants games. The New York Giants have been surprisingly quiet. Wide receivers Amani Toomer and Plaxico Burress are not part of the team anymore. Who will fill that void? Does Eli Manning have it again? Even if Eli has got it, they would be a long shot for the Super Bowl

Atlanta Falcons
We stock tickets for all Atlanta Falcon NFL games at the Georgia Dome. Atlanta has made all the right moves this off season. They have kept all their key players, quarterback Matt Ryan, running back Michael Turner, and wide reciever Roddy White. They added an excellent tight end in Tony Gonzalez, and linebacker Mike Petersen. They are ripe for a repeat performance from last year.
